I'm moving to San Francisco

My family and I have made it official, and now that we're telling everyone, I may as well tell my beloved readers as well: we're moving to San Francisco next summer (2010).

And we're super excited.

We haven't bought plane tickets or reserved a house or apartment, but we're definitely set on going, and we'll be living in the city.

I know the burning question is why. The reasons are manifold, but here are a few:

  • Guam will always be home, but we'd like to experience more of the world, and we'd love our kids to see more than this tiny little slice of life, however wonderful it is.
  • San Francisco is one of my favorite places in the world - I lived there as a teen-ager, and I fell in love with it. It's beautiful, the people are diverse and crazy and awesome, there's no shortage of things for kids and teens and adults to do, the food is great, the weather is superb, and the areas around it are varied and gorgeous, from the California coastline to the mountains to the redwoods to wine country to Oregon to the north to Disneyland to the south (I know, but we have six kids, so.).
  • As a blogger, I can work anywhere in the world, and I'd love to meet online blogging friends and readers in real life from time to time.
  • As homeschooling parents, my wife and I want to expose our children to more opportunities to learn from the world around them. Guam is a great place for that, but San Francisco offers more. It'll be an incredible learning experience for our kids.
  • We hope to go carless, and San Francisco is a good place to do that, with muni and BART and a cycling friendly city and the ability to walk and things like Zipcar and City CarShare if we need them. Guam is a very bad place to go carless if you have kids.
  • I'm veg*n, and Guam is also a bad place for that. There's exactly one veg*n restaurant on Guam, and great as it is, I'd love to be in a place with more options. I can't wait to try veg*n restaurants in S.F., or at least restaurants with more veg*n options than, you know, *salad*. Farmers Markets and natural food co-ops and leftist bookshops and such are also attractive to a person like me. We also considered Portland and Eugene, OR as options, for these same reasons, but for complicated reasons S.F. is our choice.
  • We have awesome family in the Bay Area, and I can't wait to spend time with them. Seriously, other than the family I have here on Guam, the ones in S.F. are among the rockingest I have.
  • My oldest daughter will be a senior in high school next school year, and being in California will help her visit and apply to colleges and even establish residency should she decide to go to college in CA.
  • I really like to buy used things, when I need to buy stuff, and Guam's options are, shall we say, limited.

Again, these are just a few. I could go on all day.

I love Guam, but it's time for a change. We'll always come back to Guam. We just want some new experiences, and we can't wait.

I hope to see some of you there!

Update: Do you live in San Francisco? Please, help me out by adding some info to this wiki: Moving to San Francisco.

Way to do it, man. I know what it's like to uproot with 1 kid. I can't imagine 6!

I think this is going to be a decision that will be nearly impossible to look back on and regret. I'm sure you'll love it!

I have to say, as someone living in Portland, we would definitely have loved to have you, but I would be living in SF too if I could only convince Mr. Modern Tightwad. (He hates bay area traffic) My family has lived in the Bay area/Sacramento area for five generations. I have to put in a recommendation for the kids; take the trip into Sacramento and Coloma for a gold rush history field trip. The kids can pan for gold, and it's some of the most fun I remember from my childhood.

Great choice Leo - but I guess I'm biased after 15 years here! When you are ready for a romantic dinner with your wife to celebrate, Millennium @ 580 Geary is the perfect vegan place to go. Does this also hint at a bootcamp meetup here on the left coast? I hope so!

That's fabulous news, Leo. SF is a great place to raise kids. There is so much to see and do and learn, and easy to be carless. I live in the Bay Area so hope to meet you one day.

Superb news Leo! Congrats!
We are also planning a move - a long way off (a couple of years), but the sooner we can leave the UK the better. SF, Portland, CT, Austin, Sydney, Scandanavia all appeal!

Look forward to reading all about the transition.
Best,
Jon

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the kind words.

@fitsandgiggles: The kids are taking it well - we involved them all in the decision, and though they're sad to be leaving behind our home and family, they're excited about the new things there will be to see and do.

@Markus: Will do my best to keep my new home minimalist. :)

@lynntweets: Sure, probably will be a blogging bootcamp in the Bay Area in our future!

Good move. We were there last week, talking about the same idea. Our three kids, aged 4 to 9, spent seven hours fooling around in the Exploratorium -- just one building in a whole city of interesting stuff.

thinks your move will rock a thing or two :0)

Having uprooted my family for a year, Denmark to San Diego, I will tell you that packing up your life in 2 bags per person shows you just how little you need, but how much you actually own (owns you).

Good luck

Wow, Leo, that sounds like a good move! Don't know much about SF nowadays (I'm in the Netherlands) but I was there in '65 (flower-power, oh yes!). Totally fell for her -- and standing on Sausalito's shore, overlooking lovely SF -- I promised to someday return. And I shall! Wishing you and yours all the best.

I believe most of your attentive readers would enjoy the opportunity to try Guam for sometime. I wouldn´t mind, and although it seems limited in some aspects, some things are just good like that: being limited. Great to know you´re moving, but however far you may move, you will always be near all of us!

Umm...somewhat sorry to hear that. A voice from a "tiny little slice of life" was a breath of fresh air amidst all things mediocre on the net. The road less travelled made you something special, something else. Nevertheless, good luck and please don't succumb.

You know, I'll look forward to reading your posts of trying to live a simple life and raising children in the midst of the pop-culture that suffocates the US. Your advice will be more real-world to me when you are here in the most fast-paced anti-simple living culture in the world.

@frogcreekwoods: Actually, I already live in the same culture ... Guam is very much a part of the American culture, in every way you can think of. It's a misconception that it isn't.

@yin: I hope to still take the road less traveled. In SF, I'll be able to go carless, be completely vegan, and still unschool my kids and live a minimalist life.

@joseroadas: :)

How exciting for you and your family! It's really not a difficult transition from Guam to SF if you're ready. I did it when I was 18 and haven't lived anywhere else since. And you're right, there's a ton to do for kids of all ages. SF is very family-friendly. We take our toddler to 5 or 6 different parks within walking distance from home in the Richmond district. It's not far from the Presidio and the Golden Gate bridge -- a decent but manageable distance for a run. You might also look into living in the Sunset or Noe Valley neighborhoods. There are beaches accessible by bus if you ever start to miss the ocean, though not recommended for swimming. For used goods, there are lots of Goodwill or Salvation Army and frequent estate sales in the neighborhoods.

Hey Leo, congrats on your move--we moved with our four teenage daughters to Mexico four years ago and my wife, Maya Frost, ended up writing a book about the experience of educating our kids using various options that we discovered along the way (our youngest graduates from college this Dec.). The book, The New Global Student, sounds like it might be helpful to you and has found a good following in the homeschool/mindfulness crowd. Let me know if you want a review copy and I will get the publisher (Random House) to send it.

I admire your family. I have children who are able to do exactly this . . . move to new locations to experience life and cultures. I don't seem to be able to bolster the courage needed to make a move away from my parents and secure job . . . but I long to explore. Best of luck to you and your children.

Best city ever. You'll like it here... as your resident vegan tour guide I'll suggest you look into Cafe Gratitude, Herbivore, Rainbow Grocery, Ritual Coffee, Loving Hut, The Plant Café and Alive. Once you exhaust those options, I'll give you a few more.

Hi, Leo:
My husband and I are native San Franciscans (I was born two blocks from our home!) and have raised three children here. Compared to other cities, it's kid friendly, but it's still a city. Many of our friends moved to the 'burbs when they started families. Now that the children are grown, they wish they lived "in the city." We'd be happy to welcome you to San Francisco, or help in any way we can.

I'm a Portlander, which is an incredible city to both live in and raise children. We're able to walk almost all of our errands, yet live in a lovely old neighborhood.

It's urban enough, yet not too urban.

Welcome stateside!

Hi Leo,

Excited to here the news.

I'm a member of the A-list Blogging Club and I just heard you mention this on our last webinar. I have been in SF for the better part of 18 years now and love it like no other place. If my Real Estate Services can be of any benefit to you right now in getting started with some research or if you just want to keep an eye on the market, do let me know. Until then, I will see what I can contribute to your wiki.

Hi Leo. My family moved to Virginia from California at the beginning of my daughter's senior high school year and it was brutally hard for her. As exciting as San Francisco is, it's missing all your daughter's friends and the high school prom peopled by the people she grew up with. If I could do that move all over again, I'd find ways to make the transition easier on her. Invite a best friend to stay with you over the holidays, thereby giving her something to look forward to. Sign her up with some program or activity where she can meet like-minded people before the school year starts. Good luck to all of you.

One thing is certain. You are all going to eat very well! What a foodie paradise.
